What a directory can and cannot tell you about a floor coating company
Last updated: By EpoxyFloorIndex Research Team
What this index actually holds
There are 221 floor coating companies in this index, covering the Greater Toronto Area. Precision about what a record here means matters, because the honest version is narrower than most directories imply.
A record consists of what a business posts about itself on Google, what customers have written about it there, and the location data this site works out from that. Out of the 221 companies, 199 list a website, 215 list a phone number and 174 list a street address. None list an email address, which is standard for this trade and explains why every profile on this site directs you to a phone number instead of a contact form.
Nobody has been to these companies. Nobody has looked at a floor they put in. The site states this on its methodology page, and it bears repeating here because everything else in this article rests on it.
The rating problem
Out of the 221 companies, 201 have a Google rating. The average across those 201 is 4.87, and the median sits at exactly 5.
When the typical company in a market earns a 5 out of 5, the score no longer reflects workmanship. It reflects whether a business requests reviews from happy clients, a promotional practice more than a craft ability.
That does not strip the rating of value. It gives it value in only one direction. A company far below that average stands out in this market and deserves a question. A company at or above it has shown you nothing that sets it apart from the many others parked in the same spot.
Review counts are thinner than the ratings suggest
The other figure that counts is how many reviews back up each of those ratings.
Across the same 201 rated companies, the combined count is 6307 reviews, the middle company sits at 13, and the most active one reaches 307. A median of 13 is not much data. One poor job, or one customer who only leaves a review when upset, can noticeably shift a company's average.
It also means a small difference between one company's average and another's often comes down to a single review. Treating that difference as a ranking mistakes noise for signal. For this reason, the site applies a Bayesian adjustment that draws low-volume records toward the dataset mean instead of letting a company with three five-star reviews beat one with ninety.
The label on the listing is Google's, not a credential
Every record carries a business category, and it is easy to mistake that for a specialism. It is not. It is the category Google Maps assigns.
The range across those 221 records makes the point clear. 150 carry the label flooring contractor, 17 floor refinishing service, 14 concrete contractor, 7 construction company, 7 general contractor, 7 just contractor, 4 flooring store, 4 garage builder, 3 painter and 3 painting business.
Several of those are the same job under different names. A concrete contractor who grinds and coats floors and a flooring contractor who does the same work cannot be told apart from the title alone. Others describe companies whose main trade is something else and who take coating work alongside it, which does not rule them out but is good to know before you assume the crew does this every week.
The website divides these records into five service groups of its own, and the totals in each group show another pattern: 207 companies handle epoxy and garage floor coating, 40 handle polished and sealed concrete, 28 handle polyaspartic and polyurea, 18 handle decorative flake and metallic work and 4 handle commercial and industrial floors. That final figure deserves attention. Commercial coating is a truly small niche in this market.
What no directory can tell you
Everything above is public record. What decides whether your floor stays bonded after five years is not.
GLI Epoxy Flooring advises customers to request a written scope that specifies diamond grinding or shot blasting by name instead of relying on a headline price per square foot, and it also advises confirming that grinding, crack repair, primer, base coat and topcoat sealer each appear as separate line items. This is a scope question, and it gets answered over the phone, not in a listing.
Four additional questions belong in that same conversation. What finish is the slab being ground to. Who holds the warranty, for what period, and what cancels it. Are the workers on site employees or subcontractors. And what occurs if a moisture reading comes back high on the day, since a vapour barrier costs $2.00 to $4.50 per square foot as an add-on, as SurfacePro Epoxy Flooring states.
How to use the index without over-trusting it
The sensible approach is to use this site for putting together a shortlist, not for choosing a winner.
Filter by the specific service you need and by your location. Pick three or four companies instead of just one. Drop any whose rating falls well outside the local range, and otherwise set the rating aside. Then put the same scope questions to every company and weigh the replies, not the prices, because a quote is only meaningful once you know it covers the same work.
The index spares you the hunting. It does not spare you the phone calls, and that is where the choice really gets settled.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 4.87 average rating meaningful?
- Less than it appears. That average comes from the 201 companies in this index that have any Google rating, and the middle score among those same 201 is a straight 5. Once the typical company in a market earns a straight 5 out of 5, the rating no longer sets them apart. It works better turned around: a score well under that average deserves a question, but a score at or close to it tells you next to nothing about which of two contractors to pick.
How many reviews should a floor coating company have?
- No cutoff makes a company dependable, yet the local spread is useful to see. Across the 201 rated companies in this index the median review count is 13 and the maximum is 307, from a total of 6307 reviews. A usual listed company therefore carries about a dozen reviews, and with a sample that small, one dissatisfied customer shifts the average clearly.
Does the category label on a listing mean the company is licensed for that work?
- No. That label is the category Google Maps applies to the listing, not proof of a licence, a credential or a trade ticket. Across this index, 150 of 221 companies carry the label flooring contractor, 17 floor refinishing service, 14 concrete contractor, 7 general contractor and 3 painter. Some of those categories fit firms that also coat floors, and not one of them tells you who will actually be running the grinder.
Why do some listings have no address?
- Because 47 of the 221 companies in this index do not publish one. Coating work happens on the customer's site, so many of these businesses operate from a van and a yard instead of a storefront, and Google allows a service-area business to keep its address hidden. It is not a warning sign by itself, but it does mean you cannot use the address field to determine who is actually local to you.
What should I ask that a directory cannot answer?
- The questions that determine if the floor will hold up. Which process will shape the slab, and to what shape. Whether diamond grinding or shot blasting, crack repair, primer, base coat and topcoat sealer are each listed as separate line items in the quote, which GLI Epoxy Flooring advises you to check. Who backs the warranty and for how many years. Whether the people doing the work are on staff or hired as subcontractors. None of that appears in a listing, and all of it comes out in an hour of phone calls.
