DIY Epoxy Kit or a Professional Floor: The Cost Over Time

A kit costs about a quarter as much and lasts about a fifth as long, so comparing the two prices tells you almost nothing. What decides it is how many years you expect to be standing on the floor. What we could not get, and what we used instead

The obvious source for a kit price is a Canadian retailer, and we could not read one. Home Depot Canada timed out on every request, Rona returned 403 Forbidden and so did coated.ca (August 2026). A source that will not let you read it cannot carry a figure, so no shelf price appears anywhere on this page.

What is here instead is second-hand but readable: three Ontario coating companies that publish what a kit costs, in the course of explaining why you should hire them. That is a biased sample and it is worth saying so. It also happens to be internally consistent, which is the reason to trust the shape of it even if you discount the framing. Canadian Concrete Surfaces gives $1 to $3 per square foot, which on a 400 square foot double is $400 to $1,200; ProEpoxy gives $300 to $600 for that exact garage and Canada Chemicals and Coatings $400 to $1,000. Three firms with a reason to make kits look bad, converging on roughly the same number.

Take the number to a shop and check it. If the kits on the shelf are half these prices, the conclusion on this page moves in the kit's favour and you should move with it.

How the arithmetic works, and where it is deliberately crude

Redos are rounded up. A floor that fails in year 15 of a 16-year horizon is counted as fully redone, because you cannot buy one year of floor. That rounding runs against both options identically, so it cannot tilt the comparison, but it does make the last redo look more expensive than it feels.

The crossover year is calculated on the comparison most favourable to the kit, cheapest against cheapest, so the year reported is the latest one defensible rather than the earliest. On a 400 square foot garage that is year 16.

When is a DIY kit the right call?

When the horizon is genuinely short or the floor genuinely does not matter much. Selling within a couple of years, renting the place out, coating a shed or a workshop that never sees a car, or simply wanting the floor to look better this summer without a four-figure decision. The arithmetic on this page is not an argument against kits. It is an argument against buying one while telling yourself it is the same floor for less money.

Can I do the preparation myself and have someone coat it?

You can ask, and most applicators will say no, because the preparation is the part they are warrantying. The bond between concrete and coating is created by the grind, so a firm that did not do the grinding cannot stand behind the result. What you can usefully do yourself is the clearing out: an empty garage with the shelving unbolted and the car parked elsewhere saves crew time, and crew time is what you are paying for.
